Report

Yellowknife's first World Snow Day event was a tremendous success despite the chilly temperatures (-29C).

According to registration / liabilty waivers the Yellowknife Ski Club events (snowshoeing / cross country skiing) welcomed 127 people on site during the day. In addition we had the following participants / volunteers:
Cadet Biathlon - 6
High Performance skiing - 10
Special guests - 8
Other skiers and visitors - 60 - including volunteers not signed up, others skiers, children not on photo release)

There also was action at Bristol Pit with approximately 10 snowboarders and 5 Frame Lake skaters.

At the Yellowkife Ski Club, we had about 50 people at the wrap up event with special guests – including Mayor Mark Heyck, our very own Snow King (www.snowking.ca), City Councillors Dan Wong, Rebecca Alty and Linda Bussey, Member of Legislative Assembly Wendy Bisaro and author Jamie Bastedo.

We had great support from a number of sponsors and partners: including:

•NWT Recreation & Parks
•Smokehouse Café
•Overlander Sports
•Kavanaugh Bros. Ltd.
•Jamie Bastedo
•Yellowknife Ski Club
•NWT Boardsports
•William McDonald School
•J.H. Sissons School
•City of Yellowknife
•Northwest Territories Ski Division

Together we put Yellowknife on the World Snow Day map! "Karen Johnson, WSD Committee member

"I was most excited about the people who came out to give skiing or snowshoeing a try for the first time. As well, many of our volunteers were new to the ski club too. I count it as a success!" John Stephenson, WSD Committee member
