THOUSANDS CELEBRATED WITH SOFIA 2018 THE WORLD SNOW DAY AT VITOSHA WINTER FESTIVAL UNDER THE MOTTO ‘EXPLORE, ENJOY, EXPERIENCE’

Nearly 3000 guests and citizens of Sofia celebrated, played sports and had fun at Vitosha Winter Festival, with which Sofia - European Capital of Sport started its annual program and celebrated for the second consecutive winter the World Snow Day. In front of Aleko chalet there was not enough space for the numerous people who wanted to participate in various competitions, quizzes, fun games and contests. Participants used the Gondola lift from Simeonovo Quarter and paid the symbolic sum of only 1 BGN, the weather was favorable too to the visitors of Vitosha Mountain on that sunny winter day.

The festival began with a Parallel Slalom with the participation of over 100 children who currently train in all ski schools. Demonstrations were under the watchful eye of the ski teachers, and close-run competitions evoked many emotions along the route. Right after the finish the children took part in competitions for: making snow figures, most attractive carnival disguise, largest snowball, "treasure hunt" under the snow, etc.

In the meantime Cross-country skiers created a dynamic show along the excellently prepared route around Aleko chalet, which happened for the first time in history. Participants in sprint races were applauded by hundreds of people along the track. The member of the Bulgarian Olympic team Antonia Grigorova became the winner in women competition, Teodora Malcheva finished in second place, third place for Elka Galeva. Ilia Tsonkov was the fastest man, followed by Todor Mashov, Krasimir Matikanov, etc.

The route of Ski Alpinism went up along Stenata track with Start-Finish in front of the chalet.
Festival competitions were also a test determining the members of the national teams for upcoming international championships. Georgi Radev became the champion in men event, Nikola Petkov finished in second place and third place for Svetoslav Terziiski. The winner in women competition was Ivona Mihailova, second place for Petya Toteva and third - Mihaela Georgieva.

For the first time in Bulgaria spectators saw live Downhill Mountain Biking on Snow -time trial, it turned out to be the biggest attraction of the Festival. The route started in front of Aleko chalet and was 800 meters long with many kickers, jumps and tricks possibilities, and the finish was at the first station of Romanski lift. The best Bulgarian bikers showed impressive skills and turned Downhill Mountain biking into a real snow show. The big champion was Ivan Kolev, Stivian Gatev finished 1.6 sec. after him, third place for Rosen Kovachev. In juniors competition champion was Ivan Borisov who finished more than 11 seconds earlier than Ivan Koburov, third was Grigor Valchanov. In veterans event the fastest was Georgi Radev, followed by Milan Dimov, third place - Yasen Iliev.

Mountaineering songs cheered everyone up. They were sung by older people who participated in tug of war competition and the quiz with answers to questions about Sofia, Vitosha Mountain, and European Capital of Sport project. A lot of prizes were given, children were very happy with the numerous awards. This year Vitosha Winter Festival provided again everybody with unforgettable meetings with winter sports by the motto of the World Snow Day ‘EXPLORE, ENJOY, EXPERIENCE’.
