Grindelwald to upgrade lifts to accommodate growing demand

16. November 2018
One of the claimants to the title “world’s longest gondola lift” is set to be replaced by a faster lift next winter after 40 years in operation.

The Männlichen gondola that links Grindelwald Grund to the Männlichen ski area was inaugurated in 1978.

“It was an ambitious project, at 6km it was, and remains to this day, the one of the longest gondola cableways in the world,” said a spokesperson for the Jungfrau railway.

It will make its last run towards the end of this season on 1st April 2019, set to be replaced by a new 10-person-cabins gondola which will have double the capacity, transporting up to 1,800 passengers per hour it will be history, and cut the journey from will be reduced from 30 to 18 minutes when it opens in December next year.

The new Männlichen gondola is part of the V-Cableway project, which also includes the brand new Eiger Express cable-car. Construction has already started on the shared terminal at Grindelwald Grund.
