Seeking Himalayas’ team organized World Snow Day 2017 event on 15th January 2017, near Barahan village in Himachal Pradesh, India.

Bubbling with enthusiasm and bursting with energy, kids from nearby villages and schools, braved the winter chill and hiked up to the snow area at ~2,200 m altitude above sea level.

They did following activities under supervision:

-Snow Tubing
-Snow sliding
-Snow Art
-Snowball Fights
-Tent Pitching

Also, we would like to stress that activities were done on natural mountain slopes, not curated by snow beating machines in anyway. That we believe has an advantage in instilling more confidence and improving sense of balance during adventure activities.

Intrigued by the event, some teachers from the local school also accompanied the kids and we saw the mischievous inner child in them come alive!

Safety in adventure:
For teaching about aspects of safety in mountain adventure, the kids were given a demo about the importance of roping up in glacier expeditions. The event area was not a glacier area, however we roped them up and let them have an experience of how it feels to be walking in snow roped up.

Environmental Awareness Module:
As a part of our ongoing commitment towards environmental awareness and inculcating environmental friendly lifestyle in kids, this time we adopted an activity based hands on approach. While trekking down from the event site, our team along with kids collected non-bio degradable waste (we mostly found fast food packaging, wafer and candy wrappers) carelessly strewn along the trail. Kids took on this activity very sincerely and enthusiastically and collected fragments as tiny as few millimetres small too! In no time, we cleaned up a ~2.5 km trail. By engaging them in practical activity, they had a strong realization, that at first place, this waste should not have been here and that they themselves should reduce the use of non-biodegradable stuff.

After the event, everybody enjoyed well deserved refreshment snacks consisting of Dry fruits and traditional sweets.

Weather Gods were very kind and provided ample snow to carry out snow activities well.

Overall it was a delightful, action packed and learning event.

Leading Regional newspaper of North India – The Tribune gave us a coverage as well.

Kids are already asking about the event dates for next year. We feel we’ll need to do this more often to satisfy their craving for mountain and snow adventure.
