Ski Federation of Pakistan organized the World Snow Day-2012 at a quaint little slope tucked away near Nathia Gali in the foothills of mighty Himalayas. The snow day became a prelude to a fortnight of festivities culminating in the first ever Intervarsity Ski Championships in Pakistan. What started as a simple day of fun in snow and sun, soon turned out to be a gala affair. People from all age groups thronged the small slope. Since use of ski equipment, lessons and lift were free of cost to attract more people, there was never an idle movement. University students from all over the country who had been long clamoring for an opportunity to join the activity, were the major participants on the occasion. However, casual visitors who had just strolled by to have a look stayed and joined the fun. In all about a hundred snow lovers joined the activity. On hand was one of the veteran skiers of Pakistan, who presented an impressive slide show to the visitors, taking them through the years on Pakistan’s long journey to reach winter Olympics 2010. The day ended with a roaming bonfire, songs and ski jocks. Subsequently, about 40 university students stayed on to compete in the first ever Intervarsity Ski Competitions in the country. The celebration of world snow day has heralded in a new era of ski activities in our fun starved country. It is firmly believed that a continuation of this programme in future will bring new as well as old enthusiasts to the slope. The World Snow Day was originally planned to be held in Naltar, which is the premier ski resort of the country. However, the venue was changed to Kalabagh, Nathia Gali owing to lack of snow in the region.
