World Snow Day at Crystal was designed to be an immersive occasion- a chance to learn a great deal about winter sports through one convenient and fun-filled venue. Participants registered to ENJOY, attend and interact in free activities such as ice skating, snowshoeing through the Michigan Legacy Art Park, and snow castle building; they could EXPLORE the Hall of Fame, movies and presentations, a Snow-Man Search, Snowflake Identification Challenge, broom ball, and roasting marshmallows at a rink-side fire; EXPERIENCE cross country skiing, the art of snowmaking & slope grooming, teaching kids & adults to ski and snowboard, dressing for the sport and learning about gear, snowshoeing, an obstacle course, and competitions throughout the resort. Since World Snow Day, we have recieved numerous "Thank-You" notes from participants, especially parents who were thrilled to see their kids play and explore.

Crystal Mountain’s WSD event sought to do more than just introduce participants to the sport; we wanted to create a tradition among families. Guests who attended one of each of the ENJOY, EXPLORE, and EXPERIENCE categories earned an ALL-DAY lift ticket redeemable throughout the 2012 season. Those who brought a new participant to the mountain earned an Ambassador Pin, good for discounts throughout the resort, and entry to a drawing for a 2013 Season Pass to the resort. In all, 130 participants earned a ticket to return. Our lessons were not simply rudimentary explanations- we sought to capture their curiosity and inspire them to want more from us. We succeeded: guest comments following the lessons were filled with praise and excitement and several guests immediately activated coupons for future lessons (participants in any “EXPERIENCE” activity earned a coupon for an all-inclusive lesson package in any sport offered for just $25). Our lead Snowboard instructor noted that none of the 30 participants in the “Taste of Snowboarding”session, (led by a team of snowboard instructors in a Station Teaching system) were our typical clientele and many were parents who wanted to encourage their children’s participation and learn more about the sport. According to our instructors, the questions asked indicated this audience was engaged, encouraged, and enthused.
