The best way to share the culture of snow with more Peruvian children is by celebrating World Snow Day in the Peruvian desert, one of the best places to do it is in the Huacachina. In this place, Snowboard Club Peru made presentations to the Provincial Municipality of Ica to obtain the corresponding authorization.
This year, the most worked point was the security protocols; as the priority is always to ensure the integrity of all participants during the times of COVID-19. Different measures were taken for a limited capacity of 20 people including visitors and staff.
The World Snow Day celebrated by Snowboard Club Peru began with a contest for assembling snowmen in the sand, where children from 7 to 14 years old let their imaginations run wild in the surroundings of the Huacachina lagoon. A remarkable moment during the contest was when a girl and her father, who were already playing on the sand building sandcastles, joined in the activities.
After the sandsnowmen contest, sports equipment and sandboarding classes were offered free of charge for those registered for the event previously. For this, there were 3 instructors (Victor Dito Chávez, Aldahir Herhuay and Arlene Ovalle) who taught 5 children per shift, following the protocols to respect social distancing. At this time in the afternoon, it was very enriching to see how new children were experiment this sport for first time ever. With the experienced children, some races of 2 and 3 riders were spontaneously organized to have fun with curves and jumps.
At the end of the afternoon, diplomas were handed out to the participants, recognizing in each one of them an aspect that made them unique during the day. The most persistent, the newest, the one that improved the most, the one that made the most runs, among other things. The closing ceremony was held at the Samarana restaurant in Huacachina, where the kids had a space to share with their parents the achievement and experiences of the day.
This event is part of a sports talent recruitment program, through which the most motivated children are identified to follow a 3-month training project together with the Snowboard Club Peru team. After the Project, the Club selects those who will be part of the junior team. In the future, they will be considered making trips to the snow and practice snowboarding.
