Youth Cross Country Skiers Attend Inaugural FIS World Snow Day in Canmore, Alberta (January 22, 2012)

Sunday January 22, 2012 marked the first ever FIS (Federation International de Ski) World Snow Day. On this special occasion, Fast
and Female and the Canmore Nordic Ski Club partnered with the Alberta World Cup Society, Cross-Country Canada and Winsport Canada to host two unique events for young cross-country skiers at the Canmore Nordic Centre.for young cross-country skiers at the Canmore Nordic Centre.

Fast and Female, a program launched seven years ago by 2006 Olympic gold medallist Chandra Crawford – welcomed 77 girls ages 9 to 19 for an afternoon of skiing, dancing and inspiration. All activities were be led by female role models and racers from the Alberta
World Cup Academy as well as Olympic medallist Sara Renner.
“Fast and Female is pleased to celebrate the FIS World Snow Day at the Canmore Nordic Centre with a dynamic group of young female ski enthusiasts,” said Marie-Hélène Thibeault, Executive Director for Fast and Female. “This year’s Fast and Female event built on a tradition of success as we expose more girls to highly motivating ambassadors. We’re also thrilled to have been joined by other great partners to make this inaugural FIS World Snow Day a triumph for all.”

Boyz Got Game was the name of the special event coinciding with World Snow Day, Jan 22, 2012 that brought together almost forty 8-11 year old boys with 10 of the fastest junior/U23 racers from across Canada for an afternoon of fun, skiing, racing, inspiration, and sharing the passion for going fast on skis. The event took place at the Canmore Nordic Centre and was organized by Canmore Nordic Ski Club with the support of Cross Country Canada, the Alberta World Cup Academy, and the Canmore Nordic Centre. Participating 8-11 year old boys came from communities as far away as Yellowknife, as well as Calgary, Bragg Creek, and Canmore.

Boyz Got Game was put together with a few important outcomes in mind:
1. connect young boy with some young men who can act as mentors and role models as racers
2. inspire boys to pursue cross country ski racing
3. build some racing skills for participating boys
4. have tons of fun
5. have a safe experience
6. build in a competition for 8-11 year old boys to coincide with Western Canadian Championships

In addition to the January 22 Fast and Female and Canmore Nordic Ski Club events for youth, the Canmore Nordic Centre was the stage for the Haywood NorAm Western Canadian Championships featuring the nation’s top up and coming cross-country ski racers.

World Snow Day was part of the international FIS campaign ‘Bring Children to the Snow’
