FIS World Snow Day in Söll – 20 January 2013

The World Snow Day is the second phase of the FIS (International Ski Federation) Bring Children to the snow campaign. The goal is to bring the fascination of snow sports back to children and teenagers as well as the whole family. This event happened for the first time on January 22nd 2012, in 227 locations in 39 different countries worldwide

This year 349 organizers decided to host an event to celebrate the second FIS World Snow Day all around the world. Among those hosts there was a five-member team of the Fachhochschule Kufstein, who are currently studying Sports-, Culture- and Event-Management. As part of a case study the five students successfully organized an extraordinary and exciting day in the snow.

About 180 guests, kids and teenagers with their families, visited and participated in the FIS World Snow Day in Söll. Thanks to the gorgeous weather everybody could enjoy and try out the large number of different snow sport activities.

With friendly support of the local radio station Life Radio, Schischule Söll and the local sports shop Edinger a wide-ranging varied programme could be offered to all the snow keen guests.
At the Snow Olympics even the smallest ones could prove their skills on and with snow. On four different stations the kids had to knock down cans with snowballs, speed race through slalom with a sled, build snowmen and strike out on the snow bowling alley. Further more the visitors could show their talent on a traditional Klumper.

Besides the Kids Olympics the whole family could enjoy a horse-sleigh-ride through the winter surrounding of Söll and a big number of fringe events powered by the Life Radio Winter tour. Throughout the whole day everybody, no matter if young or old, got the chance to win amazing prices. The highlight oft the day was the American auction where great items could be acquired for a good cause. The auction proceeds went towards a sportive charity project from „Jugend eine Welt“.

But also for the older kids and ski- and snowboard freaks there was a lot to discover. At the lift station of the skiing area the advanced snowboarders had the chance to get tips from two professional snowboarders on how to do tricks in a Funpark. Playfully they facilitated how to behave on the slopes and in fun parks, showed them how to prevent injuries and how to fall correctly. The two pros showed and explained tricks and coached the kids on how to proceed with trying and teach them their selves.
Since Safety on Snow is a very important subject there was a so-called „Slope-rules-course“ to ski through, where the 10 FIS slope rules are pictured and easily understandable explained.

To give kids, who can hardly or not at all effort to pursue any snow sports or other winter hobbies, a group of minor unaccompanied refugees was invited to join the FIS World Snow Day in Söll. For the teenagers a program full of fun and action was prepared. Besides skiing and snowboard lessons they also got the opportunity to show their talent in a Klumper race. The kids enjoyed the day in the snow very much, had loads of fun and left with a lot of new impressions and very happy.

The FIS World Snow Day 2013 in Söll was a complete success and many children`s eyes where brought to shine.
