Glenshee Snow Festival | 22 January 2012
532 Event Participants
Despite marginal conditions we decided to go ahead. Only two planned events had to be cancelled the Big Air bag (due to weather) and the sled dogs (due to illness).
The day dawned with true Scottish conditions a cold blustery wind accompanied by heavy snow showers. The Groomers were out; banners up and new feather flags flying. Skis and boards were ready for the taster sessions run by the local ski schools. The race organisers were grappling with setting a dual slalom suitable for all ages and abilities of kids and the ski patrol were ready to promote the FIS code of conduct. Tubing was set up at the base of a ski run that did not have enough snow for skiing near to the car park and cafe. The snow sculpture area was put outside the cafe so parents could watch from the warm.
So the fun began with the ticket office delighting customers by giving out free beginners tickets. The taster sessions were soon busy with people trying out skiing or boarding for the first time especially families. About 80 kids entered the dual slalom some first timers and most enjoying racing head to head for a change. As it was so cold there were not many happy faces at the top of the course but that was remedied by hot chocolate and lots of prizes in the cafe afterwards. K2, Salomon and Rossignol demo’d their latest skis even convincing a Dad off his straight skis and to upgrade his rear entry 70’s boots! The tubing got faster and faster as the day went on providing good fun for those not venturing up the mountain. The snow sculpture completion proved popular with the prize winners including snail, Loch Ness monster, a panda and a horse. The taster sessions made£175 for cancer and heart disease charities.
Glenshee would like all those that helped and came to “enjoy, explore and experience” the Scottish snow and celebrate World Snow Day.
