Sharing goals of a bright future
World Snow Day is proud to be working along side January Learn 2 Ski and Snowboard Month
22 December 2011
World Snow Day has seen more than 200 events join the campaign. Many organizers are creating their own events for this special occasion. Along with these organizers many existing events are building on their strong foundations and also joining World Snow Day. Indeed World Snow Day has become a platform for various activities and organizations to join.

Whilst 22nd January 2012 marks a very special day, the month of January in the in the United States is also a very special occasion in its entirety. Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month (LSSM) is a grass-roots event that has gained official recognition from the United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) and many big names in the US snow sports industry. LSSM Director Mary Jo Tarallo recently shared the following:

Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month is a grass-roots, national initiative organized through a coalition of members of the U.S. snow sports industry. The goal is to encourage children and adults to learn skiing and snowboarding by taking lessons from professional instructors. Partners include the National Ski Areas Association, Professional Ski Instructors of America-American Association of Snowboard Instructors, the National Ski Patrol, U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association, SnowSports Industries America, 21 state, regional and national resort/Nordic associations, retail buying groups and their members, rep associations, the trade media, and consumer product suppliers.

Ski and snowboard areas in 34 states will participate in January’s Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month, a national initiative that encourages children and adults to learn how to ski and/or snowboard by taking lessons from professional instructors. Five national organizations, 19 state and regional associations, retailers, reps and the snow sports media play an active role in the program. HEAD Wintersports tops a growing list of product suppliers supporting LSSM.

January learning offers are posted on the national Web site www.skiandsnowboardmonth.org. Most include a lift ticket, rentals and a lesson at participating venues. Offers are free in some cases or reasonably priced. The Web site also provides helpful tips and advice for those who are new to skiing and/or snowboarding. It can be translated into eight different languages.

LSSM organizers also are working with two U.S. Government agencies with logical ties to the snow sports industry including the U.S. Forest Service, which hosts 122 ski and snowboard areas in the U.S., and the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition. Children and adults can earn a Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) from the President’s Council by participating in alpine skiing, cross country skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing. LSSM supports First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move and Let’s Move Outside initiatives.

SKI magazine and Ski Utah are teaming up on a Bring a Friend offer that encourages current skiers and snowboarders to sign up newcomers for a beginner lesson taught by professional instructors. “There are many synergies between LSSM and World Ski Day,” said Raelene Davis, chair of LSSM and marketing director for Ski Utah. “For instance, one of the WSD goals is to influence newcomers to snow and to provide value to those who already participate.”
World Snow Day has been extremely fortunate to be working with some great organisers and the partnership now developing with LSSM is extending this list. Thank very much to Mary Jo for her very kind words but most of all thank you for putting together a great imitative to give children a chance to Explore, Enjoy and Experience the snow.
